Hello, Malaysia!

Back in Time

The International Date Line is a strange thing indeed.

We left Kuala Lumpur on Monday evening at 6:20 pm, arriving in Guanzhou, China approximately 4 hours later at 10:30 pm. So far, so good.

But trying to wrap my head around a 12:25 am departure time from Guanzhou on Tuesday morning, arriving in Vancouver at 8:25 pm on Monday night was a bit mind-boggling. I'll blame it on the jet lag, and the fact that this was my first experience with "crossing the line."

By 11:15 pm on Monday we were on an overnight flight to Mexico City, landing just before 7:00 am on Tuesday. A cramped, 45 minute rush hour metro ride later and we were at the Observatorio bus station, in time to grab a quick bite to eat before boarding our 9:40 am bus for Morelia. One final bus transfer and we arrived in Pátzcuaro just before 3:30 pm.

OK, let's review. Left KL at 6:20 pm on Monday. Arrived Pátzcuaro about 21 hours later on the Tuesday afternoon.

But when I add up just the flight time (4+12+7) I get 23 hours we spent in the air. Add another 7 hours for two plane, two bus and one metro connections, plus 6+ hours actually sitting on buses and metros, and we're at 36 hours of travel time, accomplished in a mere 21 hours.

That definitely makes the International Date Line magic. Black magic, I would say, since I arrived home with the migraine of the century.

But, this is now day 4 back at home, and I'm finally feeling up to finishing what I started. I'll be getting back to the half dozen or so blog posts I still have in draft over the next few days. Wouldn't want to leave you all hanging...
