Hello, Malaysia!

The Food - Part 6 (Street Food)

If you've missed the other posts in this blog, you can find them all here on the main page.

I feel like I should apologize because, here's another food post. But there is just so much amazing food in Malaysia that I just have to share! Today, let's take a whirlwind tour of some of the street food.

Jalan Alor is a famous night market filled with hawker stalls selling a huge variety of street food. We didn't manage to try it all, but here's a sampling of the yumminess on offer...

Little fried balls of some kind of dough with assorted fillings like cheese, chicken, crab, etc.

This stall was selling a variety of seafood, all artistically presented. Oyster omelette, anyone?

Speaking of seafood, these guys were doing a roaring business in squid skewers. Not my thing, but apparently very popular nonetheless.

And speaking of skewers, you can buy almost anything on a stick at these night markets. Chicken, beef, pork, lamb, sausage (aka hot dogs) and even tofu, hurray!

And if skewers aren't your thing, you can choose from a variety of pretty looking nibblies, all kept warm in these giant bamboo trays set over steam pans.

Maybe you're looking for some fresh fruit to take away and have for breakfast the next day? Gotcha covered.

But breakfast doesn't have to stop at fresh fruit. The food courts are generally open for breakfast by 9ish, even though the official opening time often isn't until 10. Must have something to do with the night markets being open until 3 or 4 a.m.

One of my personal favourite breakfast items, which unfortunately we only had once because we only saw the guy working at his stand the one morning, was this roti dish. It's a hot, flaky roti with a fried egg on top, smothered in a delicious curry sauce.

Right next to the roti stand that was hardly ever open, was this stand offering nasi lemak to go, neatly wrapped up in packages made of banana leaf.

Then there was the morning we had dim sum for breakfast. So many choices! We had no clue what most of them were, but it was fun guessing as we ate.

Not technically street food, but these breakfast items in the bakery section of a local grocery store made us do a double take. Garlic chicken cheese buns, interesting combination. And darned if I know what chicken floss is. Maybe we'll try one next time we're in the country.

And finally, street food to start your day off right...freshly roasted coffee. Beans, that is.
